Keeseville Community Arts Festival returns

KEESEVILLE | It's that time of year again; the Keeseville Community Arts Festival is now in full swing. On July 15, 40 plein air artists began painting various sites around Keeseville, such as Ausable Chasm, Port Douglas Beach, Highlands Vineyard, downtown Main Street, and other places around town. Those 120 newly created works of art will be on display and for sale during the two-day Plein Air Show & Sale at the Old Stone Mill. The opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday will kick the show off and continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the option of eating brunch and sipping on mimosas with the artists from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an additional $10. Besides the art show, Friday's festivities will also include a children's puppet show at the Keeseville Free Library starting at 10 a.m. and a few concerts — one featuring Austin and the In-Laws at 6 p.m. at the Ausable Brewing Company and another at 6 p.m. at Highlands Vineyard featuring Fusion. For adults only, Artistry Community Theatre will be presenting its production of "{Proof}" — a drama tackling both mental illness and genius, while offering viewers a remarkable glimpse into the world of mathematics and mathematicians. This production tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his 50s and professor at the University of Chicago. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert's death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office. Showtimes will be July 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. and July 20 at 2 p.m. at the AuSable Valley Grange No. 973. The main festivities will start early Saturday at 9 a.m. with raku pottery demonstrations at The Riverside Inn & Pottery Studio. Those will continue through the day until 3 p.m. Also, at 9:30 a.m., a 5K Color Walk to benefit the Keeseville Free Library will take place. At 10 a.m., the festival will kick into high gear, with a variety of hands-on demonstrations, shows, sales, children's activities, crafts, live music performances, ice cream sundae bar (donated by Stewart's Shops), and much more throughout downtown. Those include barn quilt making by the Ausable Valley Grange and a tie-dye workshop on the Old Stone Mill lawn. On Sunday at 3 p.m., the festival will end with a concert featuring Sarah Mitchell at Highlands Vineyard. In 2021, AdkAction, which sponsors the event each year, expanded its already established outdoor painting festival, thus officially creating the Keeseville Community Arts Festival. The purpose of the newly expanded festival was to showcase art and culture throughout Keeseville, all while bringing visitors to the community to help jumpstart community vitality after the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns and isolations.
