E'town Day returns July 19

ELIZABETHTOWN | It's that time of year again; E'town Day will return on July 19. E'town Day has been a mainstay of the North Country since it started with the celebration of the town's bicentennial as Fireman's Field Day, said Harvey Putnam, an organizer of the annual event and member of the Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Department. "And it's been going strong pretty much every year since." This Saturday, that tradition will continue. "Elizabethtown Day, the third Saturday in July, [has been held] every year since 1998," said Supervisor Cathleen Reusser. "It is a day that offers an opportunity for current and former residents, their families and friends, to come home and see people they have not seen in many years." The festivities will kick off with a town-wide garage sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be a 3-Club Fun Tournament at the Cobble Hill Golf Course, nine holes in a 2-man scramble format. The Adirondack History Museum will be hosting a Thai Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in honor of the time when Prince Mahidol and Princess Mother (Miss Sangwan Talapat) visited Essex County in August 1919 during their engagement. Guests will be able to learn more about the couple, experience Thai dance, eat traditional food, and take part in a craft sale. A parade will commence at 3 p.m. with numerous floats, local organizations, businesses, and fire departments participating. A celebration will then be held at the Cobble Hill Golf Course from 3 until 9 p.m., featuring live music, bouncy houses, games, and more. The fire department will be selling drinks and food, cooking up sausages, hot dogs, french fries, and more. The festivities will conclude with fireworks at dusk. "The Town of Elizabethtown sponsors the fireworks, which is a great contribution," Putnam said. "The fireworks are always fantastic." This year's celebration will benefit the North Country Honor Flight. "I'm not a veteran myself, but I support our troops," Harvey said. "And the North Country Honor Flight is a great thing." Along with the festivities, at least one class reunion will be taking place, as well, which has become a tradition among the town's alumni, said Harvey. "A lot of people travel home for this week, so they just coordinate their reunions along with the event. It's been going on for many years, and it makes [E'town Day] even more fun."
