Guest Viewpoint: New York's costly climate crusade

I've long warned that New York's aggressive push for electrification under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) prioritizes green ideology over energy security and affordability. The New York Independent System Operation (NYISO) issuing an Energy Warning in response to this week's heat wave laid bare the consequences of a strained power grid. Gov. Hochul's plea to set air conditioners to 76°F and avoid appliance use underscores our grid's fragility, a direct result of the state's green scheme agenda. The hypocrisy is glaring. Albany Democrats, including Hochul, championed Indian Point's shutdown in 2020-21, ignoring warnings of rising emissions and utility costs. Now, facing grid strain and soaring demand, Hochul directs the New York Power Authority to build a new nuclear plant upstate. This pivot admits what we've said all along: renewables alone can't meet our needs. Yet, the damage is done, carbon emissions spiked 35% post-Indian Point, and New Yorkers' electric bills climbed, with 26% of New York City's power costs tied to its closure. This rushed electrification has stripped New Yorkers of liberties. Bans on gas stoves, wood-fired pizza ovens and new gas heating systems, effective in 2026 for small buildings, force costly transitions. Switching to electric appliances can cost households $1,000-$2,000, while retrofitting buildings for electric heat is often unaffordable. The state's 2035 electric vehicle mandate further burdens residents, with only 1.5% of vehicles currently EVs and charging infrastructure lagging, especially upstate. These mandates feel like an assault on personal choice, prioritizing climate goals over practical realities. The costs are staggering. NYISO warns of capacity shortfalls by 2030 without 20,000 MW of new clean energy. Transformers are at risk of failing under electrification's strain, threatening rolling blackouts. Utility companies can't power every home, business and hospital simultaneously, yet Albany pushes forward, heedless of the $1.7 billion in annual damages from extreme weather or the economic toll on families already struggling. Hochul's nuclear proposal is a step toward reliability, but it's a reaction to a crisis we predicted. New York needs an all-of-the-above energy strategy, not dogmatic mandates that sacrifice affordability and freedom. As we face hot summers and harsh winters, we must prioritize a stable grid over ideological wins.
