Ticonderoga's perfect season ends in state semifinals

BINGHAMTON | Ticonderoga went inning for inning with Section I juggernaut Tuckahoe. The game was scoreless through four, and the Sentinels trailed only 1-0 heading into the seventh. But Ticonderoga couldn't solve sophomore phenom Katie Attwood. The left-handed pitcher struck out 17 of 23 batters faced to hand the Sentinels a 3-0 loss in the NYSPHSAA Class C softball semifinals Friday at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton. Attwood did not issue a walk and surrendered only two hits. Avery Lender singled to lead off the third inning, and Addi Munson recorded a one-out double in the fourth. Attwood was equally impressive at the plate, helping her own cause by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. She broke the scoreless tie with one out in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center that scored Giana Galati from third base. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh. Attwood's infield single drove in a run, and with one out, Cayleigh Handel's sacrifice fly to right field plated Bianca Pian. Ticonderoga threatened in the scoreless fourth. With one out, Munson's hard-hit ball to the left side of the infield resulted in a double, but she was stranded in scoring position after Attwood struck out Myleigh Drinkwine and Sophia Johndrow. Attwood retired the last 11 Sentinels she faced, with nine outs coming via strikeout. Drinkwine, making her 17th start in the circle for Ticonderoga this season, and the defense behind her held Tuckahoe in check for most of the morning. They left Tigers stranded in scoring position in the first, second, third and fourth innings to keep the ballgame scoreless. Addy Moore preserved the 1-0 deficit in the top of the sixth by turning a double play. She snagged a lineout at short and flipped to Lender at first to double up the runner. But Attwood struck out the side in the sixth, then recorded her 16th and 17th strikeouts in the seventh to end the game. The Sentinels finished the season 17-1. They went undefeated to win the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Division II title and followed up with a Section VII Class C championship. Eric Mullen's squad will graduate five players: Jazlyn Disbrow, Johndrow, Drinkwine, Madilyn Defayette and Moore. During their high school careers, they helped Ticonderoga post a 57-17 record.
