Tannery Pond receives $78K NYSCA award

NORTH CREEK | North Creek's Tannery Pond Center has been awarded $78,000 by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to make building repairs that will ensure the safety of its guests, shore up the foundation of its 23-year-old structure, and allow the center to further expand its programming. The announcement followed a unanimous vote by the Johnsburg Town Board June 3 to extend the community center's lease by five years so that the nonprofit could accept the grant. NYSCA requires that grantees must have a lease long enough to cover the expected useful life of the project. Tannery Pond's lease with the town would have expired in 18.5 years without the extension, which didn't meet the grant requirement for this repair. "I would like to congratulate the Tannery Pond Board and staff on receiving a NYSCA grant which helps the Town of Johnsburg immensely," said Town Supervisor Kevin Bean. "The monies will be used to fix the front handicapped walkways, concrete stairs and foundation crack which will provide much-needed budgetary relief for these projects and highlights the partnership between Tannery Pond and the Town of Johnsburg." Mirian Deutch, the president of the nonprofit's board that oversees the center, was equally enthusiastic. "We're so grateful to the Johnsburg Town Board and NYSCA for making this possible. We are working hard to make Tannery Pond a valuable asset to the town and its businesses, and this grant will help us in that mission." Tannery Pond Center was founded in 2002 as a nonprofit dedicated to providing cultural, educational, recreational, and social opportunities to the Gore Mountain region. The center operates the Widlund Art Gallery, presents live performances of regional and national talent, offers educational events, and oversees use of the community center by a wide range of regional groups, including the town. The grant is one of 134 capital projects from across New York State that NYSCA awarded this year, for a total of $86 million. "These transformative projects improve communities, drive tourism and foster innovation," said NYSCA Executive Director Erika Mallin in announcing the awards. In the past year, Tannery Pond Center has expanded its event and performance schedule by more than 40 percent, and drawn more residents and visitors to town. That schedule has included summer and winter concert series, multiple shows by regional artists and local theater groups, a festival of workshops and performances by the Haudenosaunee peoples, and a display recounting North Creek's key role in launching New York's ski industry. Upcoming events include an ongoing display of art by Johnsburg Central School students, a free ice cream social for the community on June 13, the Seagle Festival Preview concert on June 18, an American Red Cross blood drive June, a workshop on Basic Land Navigation on June 29 that is part of its new "Tannery Talks" series, a "Kids Art" workshops every Thursday starting July 3 at the North Creek Farmers' Market, and five concerts in a summer concert series that launches July 10.
