Schroon gearing up for Fourth of July

SCHROON | Schroon Lake is revving up for their biggest event of the year. As the Fourth of July inches closer, the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce is finalizing all the details and is expecting that the town will be in for another amazing Independence Day celebration. "The Fourth of July here in Schroon isn't just about celebrating Independence Day," reflected Sue Palisano, Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. "It's about celebrating Schroon Lake and everything the community is about; hospitality, welcoming visitors, and providing experiences to folks that we hope they will enjoy and will come back." On Thursday, July 3, the national holiday will kick off in Schroon with the Adirondack Artisans and Crafts market, followed by a concert free to the public courtesy of the Schroon Lake Arts Council. At 7 p.m. at the Lodge at Schroon Lake, the McKrells and their Celtic Americana music will delight audiences. "They have a huge following," remarked Palisano. The morning of July 4 will have no shortage of entertainment and fun family activities. At the main stage on Dock Street, live music will be playing from noon until 4 p.m. In the park, children will enjoy a climbing wall, face painting, concessions, food, a bounce house, with Pipsqueak the Clown making a festive appearance. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., more live entertainment will be featured on Main Street, while the Schroon Community Church will be once again hosting their extremely popular chicken BBQ fundraiser. "That will last until the chicken is sold out, which is usually within an hour and a half to two hours," Palisano noted. "Get it while it's hot." At the Chamber of Commerce office (located at 1075 US Route 9), the annual basket raffle will be running all day with between 60 and 70 baskets and gift cards donated by area organizations and businesses. This year will mark the 69th annual Fourth of July parade in Schroon. As the procession makes its way down main street and through the village beginning at 6 p.m., the Schroon Lake Central School Girls basketball team, winners of the NYSPHSAA Section VII Class D championship, will serve as the Grand Marshals. Palisano said to expect an announcement on Citizen of the Year within the next few weeks. "New to the parade this year will be the Fort Ticonderoga Fife and Drum corps," Palisao said. The Granite Brass Band will be joining the event once again, and this year will be bringing along the Dixie Land Chicks that will feature sounds of the south. New this year at 7:30 p.m. on the Dock Street stage James Cawley will wow audiences with his acclaimed show "The King in Concert: An Elvis Tribute." The performance will be 75 minutes of non-stop music thanks to the artist and his Las Vegas show band. "As we always do, we will have our patriotic concert organized by the Word of Life Bible Institute, following that at 8:45 p.m., and it will go right through until the fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m.," Palisano said. As is the Schroon tradition, the fireworks will be set off from a barge over the lake at the town beach. The chamber has welcomed a new visitor center and events manager, Vanessa Crowley. Recently hired, Crowley will be taking on the organizational role for the Fourth of July going forward. Palisano said the chamber is seeking volunteers to assist on the Fourth, staffing road closure barriers and with parade lineup. Volunteers must be 18 and older, and the positions will be paid.
