Peru captures CVAC D-I crown in final game

SARANAC LAKE | Peru's pursuit of the CVAC Division I baseball title came down to its final conference game. The 12th-ranked Nighthawks recovered from squandering a 3-0 lead in the third inning and held off Saranac Lake for a 7-3 win on Thursday, May 15. Peru freshman Keegan Theriault pitched four scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit while striking out four. Donnie Mitchell led the Nighthawks' lineup with a pair of base knocks. Sophomore Gabe Moore drove in two runs. Moore, Deacon Whitmarsh and Jake Frechette all singled. Peru finished with only one blemish on its CVAC record, a 9-2 loss on Monday, May 12 at Saranac. The Nighthawks, though, returned the favor 48 hours later with a dramatic 11-9 victory. Peru broke a 9-9 tie with two runs in the sixth inning, and Whitmarsh pitched a one-two-three seventh. In the decisive sixth inning, Mitchell singled and Frechette doubled with one out. Moore ripped a single to center field, scoring Mitchell and advancing Frechette to third base. Whitmarsh followed with an RBI groundout to score Frechette. Whitmarsh shut the door in the seventh inning.
