Stec-sponsored public safety bills blocked

ALBANY | Two public safety measures sponsored by Sen. Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) were blocked from reaching the Senate floor for a vote May 13. In a statement, Stec said Senate Democrats on the Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee voted down and blocked Senate bill S.2656, which would fully repeal HALT, in a party-line vote. Similarly, Senate Democrats on the Transportation Committee voted down Senate bill S.1427, which repeals the Green Light Law for Northern Border Counties. Stopping the dangerous increase in violent assaults inside correctional facilities and securing the Northern Border are two major concerns for law-abiding residents in the North Country and New York State, Stec said, adding that the two bills would support law enforcement, giving officers the safety measures they need to protect communities across the region. "The move by Senate Democrats to block my two bills just shows where their interests lay," said Stec. "It's not with legal, law-abiding New Yorkers. It's not with law enforcement, either. It's with continuing the same trend of lax, pro-crime policies that have made prisons historically unsafe and allowed our Northern Border communities to become a hot zone for illegal border crossings, drug trafficking and crime. "It's an outrage that when given the opportunity to meaningfully address our multiple public safety crises, Democrats have chosen to block my legislation. Despite that, I will continue to fight to secure our Northern Border, stop prison violence and make our region and state safe again."
