John Brown Lives! joins International Coalition of Sites of Conscience

LAKE PLACID | As John Brown Lives! (JBL!) celebrates its 25th anniversary of preserving and promoting the legacy of abolitionist John Brown, the organization announced that it has been accepted as a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is the only worldwide network dedicated to transforming places of past suffering into dynamic centers that promote civic action on today's struggles for human rights and justice. This prestigious designation recognizes John Brown Lives! commitment to uplifting, promoting and interpreting the significance of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid, NY in the history of the abolitionist movement and its continuing relevance to contemporary social and racial justice issues. "For 25 years, John Brown Lives! has worked to promote, preserve and interpret not just the physical site where John Brown lived and wished to be buried, but also the powerful moral legacy he and his family left behind," said Martha Swan, Executive Director of John Brown Lives! "Joining the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience allows us to connect our local history to global movements for justice and human rights, creating opportunities for visitors to engage with both historical and contemporary struggles against oppression." The John Brown State Historic Site, located in North Elba, includes the historic farm where the renowned abolitionist lived with his family in the 1850s before leading the raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859, an action intended to inspire a slave uprising and ultimately help bring an end to slavery in the United States. "Sites of Conscience serve as bridges between past and present, memory and action," said Parusha Naidoo, Communications Manager from the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. "John Brown Lives! exemplifies this mission, connecting visitors to the historical struggle against slavery while inspiring them to reflect on and combat ongoing injustices in our world today. The announcement coincides with a year-long celebration of JBL!'s 25th anniversary, which will include special events, educational programs, and community discussions that highlight the connections between historical movements for abolition and contemporary struggles for racial justice and human rights.
