Burghers extend winning streak with double-header

WARRENSBURG | The third week of competition for the Warrensburg Central baseball team yielded two more wins from a doubleheader April 14 at home versus Notre Dame/Bishop Gibbons. As of April 20, Warrensburg was 5-1 for the season. In the first game, won by the Burghers 17-0, senior Louis Lang struck out 10 batters while allowing merely one hit over four innings, after which the game was called. Junior Owen Jones hit two doubles, scoring four runs total, in addition to tallying two other RBIs. Lang hit a double and three RBIs while senior Cameron Hunt-Allen was two for four at the plate, hitting a double that sent three runners home. Freshman Maris Martin hit a double and two RBIs. Jones stole two bases, while sophomore Paul Moore, senior Caleb Remington, Duell, and Martin each advanced an extra base. Coach Mike Perrone said Hunt-Allen's bases-clearing double was a "huge" inspiration for the team. In the second game, won by Warrensburg 11 to 1, junior Kawliga Duell pitched five innings and struck out ten batters over five innings. Hunt-Allen hit a double and was credited with three RBIs, while Martin, junior Colton Stannard, and sophomore Paul Moore each hit an RBI double, and Jones scored three runs. Lang, Owens, and Remington stole a total of four bases; Owens executed two. "It was huge for us to have everybody contribute to the two wins," Perrone said. He praised Lang and Duell for their pitching, noting that they both throw powerful fastballs, as well as wily curveballs and changeups. "They mix up their pitches as they pound the strike zone, keeping batters off-balance — they don't know what's coming at them," he said. "Because of their pitching, our defense didn't have to work hard — meanwhile, our batters kept hitting." After a game on April 21 against Fort Ann and a matchup the next day with Berlin-New Lebanon, the Burghers have a game against Argyle at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, and a showdown with Salem Cambridge on Friday, April 25. All are home games that start at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, April 28, the Burghers play Lake George at 4 p.m. on the Lakers' field.
