Chazy woman eludes police pursuit

CHAZY | State Police arrested a Chazy woman April 2 and charged her with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a Class D Felony, relating to an incident that began March 31. On the morning of March 31, State Troopers were dispatched to Champlain Street in Rouses Point to investigate a report of unauthorized use of a pickup truck. Troopers learned that a black 2024 Ford Maverick had been loaned to Nichole L. Lapier, 44, the day before, with the understanding that she would return it by the end of the day. The next morning, when the vehicle had not yet been returned, a search involving multiple local law enforcement agencies was launched. The truck was spotted shortly afterward, and a chase involving the Plattsburgh City Police Department with assistance from the State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff's Department began. It covered about 10 miles, crossing over several roads and jurisdictions, including the City of Plattsburgh, the Town of Plattsburgh, and Peru. The pursuit ended when authorities lost sight of the truck. At about that time, the Clinton County Sheriff's Department received the report of a female asking for help on Lapham Mills Road, but by the time they arrived, she was gone. State Police and the Clinton County Sheriff's Department searched the area and found the truck but not its driver. Lapier was located by the Clinton County Sheriff's Department hiding in the attic of an apartment complex on Lapham Mills Road. She was taken into custody without further incident. Lapier was processed by the Plattsburgh City Police Department and the Clinton County Sheriff's Department and then taken to State Police in Plattsburgh, where she was charged. From there she was taken to the Town of Plattsburgh Court for arraignment and was released on her own recognizance. State Police were assisted by the Clinton County Sheriff's Department, the Plattsburgh City Police Department, and the Essex County Sheriff's Department.
