SLP's McCormick chosen as CVAC hockey MVP

PLATTSBURGH | Saranac Lake/Lake Placid sophomore Ayden McCormick was selected as the 2024-25 CVAC boys hockey Most Valuable Player, as decided by the conference's head coaches. Beekmantown's Justin Frechette was tabbed the Gary Ryan Coach of the Year, and Plattsburgh High was the recipient of the Ray Holmes sportsmanship award. In eight conference games, McCormick totaled 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. He recorded a hat trick against Saranac on Jan. 9. Frechette, with only six upperclassmen listed on the roster, guided Beekmantown to a 5-1-2 record in the CVAC and a share of the regular-season title with Saranac. Plattsburgh High led the way with three first-team selections, featuring forward Braeden Calkins (12-1-13), defenseman Sam Bezio (4-2-6) and goaltender Owen Chapple (.937 SV%, 1.85 GAA). Beekmantown landed two first-teamers in forwards Edward Sweenor (11-8-19) and Novak Jarus (8-12-20). Ashtyn Catlin (7-8-15) represented Saranac as a first-team defenseman. The senior finished third in conference scoring behind Jarus and Sweenor despite playing on the blue line.
