Nonpartisan group for governmental change forms in Horicon

BRANT LAKE | A community action group that formed recently scheduled a March 27 gathering at the Horicon Town Hall in Brant Lake for people seeking changes in national governance. The group's leaders expected about a dozen people to attend, but they were surprised to see the hall fill up with 54 people, group facilitator Cookie Barker of Chestertown said. Those attending were primarily residents of northern Warren County and southern Essex County, Barker said. She and Colleen Murtagh of Pottersville reported that people attending the meeting were residents of the towns of Chester, Horicon, Schroon Lake, Ticonderoga, Warrensburg, Thurman, Johnsburg, Minerva, Newcomb, and North Hudson. Barker asked those attending to express their issues of concern, and based on their responses, focus groups were formed to prioritize concerns and discuss community action initiatives. For 20 minutes, these focus groups addressed issues related to the environment, health care and social security, Education/Science, food insecurity, flow of information, the economy/impacts of tariffs, boosting voter turnout, and upholding democracy. Each focus group reported a summary of their discussion to the entire gathering, after which people signed up for community action committees with the intent to pursue remedial initiatives. Barker, a retired Schroon Lake Central School Science teacher, said that renowned landscape photographer Carl Heilman and his family members started the group a few months ago. The name Blue Line Indivisible was chosen for the local organization, and membership has grown dramatically since then. The next meeting of Blue Line Indivisible is scheduled for 5 p.m. April 10 at the Horicon Town Hall in Brant Lake. According to Blue Line Indivisible's webpage, the group is "committed to creating positive change through positive action" and is based on the principles of "a free and fair democracy, — of the people, by the people and for he people" " and that "every person in the United States deserves equal rights and opportunities." "We're interested in getting progressive Adirondackers together to make a difference — and encourage people to do whatever they can in their own community," Barker said.
