Town of Wbg. seeks sale of Schroon riverfront land

WARRENSBURG | The town of Warrensburg plans to sell 6.98 acres of land at the end of Swan Street that features scenic frontage on the Schroon River. The town board has approved advertising for bids on this town watershed property that until recent years hosted a productive town well. To be valid, bids should be received in writing by 4 p.m. April 9, and they are to be opened at the town board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. that same day. An appraisal of the land has been conducted, and if the bids are substantially below the appraised value, the property is to be sold via an online auction, Warrensburg Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty told town board members at their March 12 meeting. A bid was opened on another plot of town property off Harrington Hill, and it was rejected by the board because it represented less than half the land's appraised value. The board voted to award Catalfamo Construction of Hudson Falls a contract to construct a pole barn beside the town highway garage near the Warrensburg landfill. The structure is to protect highway vehicles and heavy equipment from inclement weather. Catalfamo Construction's successful bid was for $230,400. A state grant of $115,000 has been pledged toward the project. In other business, the town board passed a resolution expressing support for Adirondack Park Agency Executive Director Barbara Rice and her performance. A union representing less than half of the agency's employees has alleged Rice is responsible for "bullying" APA workers, causing a "toxic workplace" by creating a "culture of fear." The allegations have prompted the state Inspector General's office to investigate the matter. Others have defended Rice's performance, saying that she merely has high standards and has expected more work from the Agency's employees during her nearly three years as Executive Director. It has also been alleged that the union's complaints against Rice were prompted by Rice's initiative to move the agency's headquarters from Ray Brook to Saranac Lake. In response to the allegations, resolutions of support for Rice praising her performance have been issued by the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages, the town of Indian Lake, the Essex County Board of Supervisors, and the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board. Rice is a prior assistant secretary for economic development for New York, concentrating on the North Country. At a recent APA meeting, Rice said she is working with the state Office of Employee Relations to address the concerns. In another pending topic discussed at the Warrensburg Town Board's March meeting, Geraghty noted that Warrensburg Emergency Medical Services has proposed moving its headquarters to the building on River Street that has served as the headquarters of Lotus Group Companies USA. Officials of the ambulance squad are to outline their proposal at the town board's April 9 meeting.
