Clinton County basketball teams go 0-3 in state playoffs

PLATTSBURGH | The Beekmantown boys and Peru and Saranac girls basketball teams went winless against Section II opposition in NYSPHSAA basketball tournaments. Beekmantown played on Tuesday, March 11 at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park. Peru and Saranac competed on Wednesday, March 12 at Averill Park High School. CLASS A GLENS FALLS 100 BEEKMANTOWN 51 CLIFTON PARK | The top-ranked Black Bears (24-0) scored triple-digit points for the third time in their last five outings. Glens Falls took command right from the outset. Noah Girard made a pair of free throws at the end of the first quarter to cap the Black Bears' 11-0 run and supply Glens Falls with a 23-6 lead. The Black Bears took a 48-20 lead into halftime, and they picked up right where they left off. Glens Falls went on another 11-0 run to pull away. It shot 17-for-36 from the 3-point line. The Black Bears defeated Wayne 50-37 to capture the Class A state championship last season. Glens Falls has not lost since March 4, 2023, when it dropped the Section II Class B final to Catholic Central. Garrett Pelkey led Beekmantown with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles finished their season 13-9. They shared the CVAC Division I title with Northeastern Clinton and Plattsburgh High before defending their Section VII Class A championship against Plattsburgh. ALBANY ACADEMY 70 PERU 39 AVERILL PARK | Eva Gitto (22) and Alex Leonard (19) combined to outscore the Nighthawks by themselves. No. 2 Albany Academy held Peru to 10 points in the first half, and the Bears connected on seven shots from beyond the 3-point line. Reese Duprey paced the Nighthawks with a team-high 21 points. "Albany Academy is an extremely talented and well-rounded team," Peru head coach Brittany Marshall said. "Our girls fought hard until the final buzzer tonight. Reese Duprey played phenomenal all around. Every single player entered the game tonight and contributed positively. "Although our season came to an end tonight, I couldn't be more proud of how these girls performed this season. These girls truly bought into our program culture, trusted the process and worked incredibly hard to get to where they did this season. We close the chapter tonight with our heads held high." CLASS B VOORHEESVILLE 43 SARANAC 31 AVERILL PARK | The 10th-ranked Blackbirds were superb on the defensive end. They held Brenna Ducatte, the Spartans' all-time leading scorer, to five points. Maddie Gagnier anchored Saranac with 13 points. Layla Pellerin added eight points. Voorheesville advanced to the final four later in the week, defeating Bishop Grimes 53-45. "I would like to start by saying how tremendously proud I was of the team's effort in this game," Spartans head coach Tim Newell said. "Our girls came out and executed the defensive game plan to perfection. We were facing a Voorheesville team that had averaged scoring 12 to 15 3-pointers in each of their previous two wins. The girls limited them to only three 3-point baskets. "Our mindset was to force them to take shots inside the arc. We went to a box-and-one defense with Lily Brown covering their top scorer, Mia Carmody. We wanted to force their center, Hannah Woodworth, to score on the interior. Carmody led them in scoring 22 points, but it was Woodworth scoring eight points in the second half that got them the cushion they needed to pull out the win. "Our two top scorers – Brenna Ducatte and Layla Pellerin – played extremely well defensively. Their communication in our box-and-one defense was huge. Unfortunately, they both just never got into a good flow offensively. "After the game, it's always hard when the reality sets in to the seniors that their careers are finally over. Our seniors have nothing to hang their heads about. They are part of a four-year run of sectional titles. They have raised the bar for our future players and have shown them how much commitment and hard work goes into becoming a sectional champion. "I'm very proud to have coached such a nice group of seniors this year, and I wish them the very best."
