Reinhard W. Straub

CAROLINA, R.I. | Reinhard W. Straub, 74, of Carolina, R.I., passed away with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, at the Riverview Nursing and Rehab Center in Coventry, R.I. He was the beloved husband of Susan M. Straub and the son of the late Walter and Wiltraut (Till) Straub. Reinhard was born in Austria on May 16, 1950, and immigrated with his family to Burlington, Vt., in 1951. A gifted violinist, Reinhard pursued a professional music career after attending Syracuse University. An exceptional rock violinist, he worked with many artists, including Aerosmith, Peter Tork (The Monkees), Michael Bruce (Alice Cooper), Paul Butterfield, John Lee (Dizzy Gillespie) and Harry Nilsson, to name a few. Reinhard was to take part in a show for musician artists when he landed in rehab and remained in upper New York. In May 1991, he survived a plane crash and then completed hundreds of acrylic and oil paintings and drawings. Reinhard earned his bachelor's degree in human services at Empire State College and received a master's degree in social work at Adelphi University in 1994. He was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Clinical Supervisor who worked in the substance abuse and mental health field for over 30 years. He was a faculty member at Empire State College, SUNY Albany. He conducted over 1,000 clinical interventions, facilitated treatment, advocated on behalf of physicians and healthcare professionals while at the N.Y. Committee for Physician Health and later with HAVEN, the CT assistance program for healthcare professionals. In 2011, Reinhard founded Clinical Services of Rhode Island, a system of three licensed substance abuse outpatient facilities. He went on to start another licensed facility, Recovery Services of CT, in January 2018. In addition, he was an avid golfer and intrepid skier. His greatest accomplishment was being a father to his three children, in whom he took so much pride. Besides his wife, Susan, he is survived by his children, Alexander Straub of Providence, R.I.; Ian Straub of Carolina, R.I., and fiancée, Milana Cepeda, and her daughter Saoirse; and Katrina Straub of Narragansett, R.I; a sister, Henriette V. Chapman of Rouses Point, N.Y.; a brother, Peter (Kathy) Straub of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and his many beloved nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County, 27 North Rd., South Kingstown, R.I ., at 2 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held in New York State on Saturday, May 31, 2025; specifics to be determined.
