Clinton Co. Legislature backs COs

PLATTSBURGH | The Clinton County Legislature had unanimous support in calling for a full repeal or substantial reform of the HALT Act. On Wednesday night, all 10 county legislators voted to pass a resolution in support and solidarity of corrections officers as official mediation in the ongoing strike continued in its third day. In the resolution, county legislators said corrections officers face increasingly dangerous working conditions due to rising incidents of violence and assaults, placing both staff and the incarcerated populations at dangerous risk. "The Clinton County Legislature stands in full support of the correction officers who are advocating for better working conditions, better staffing levels and the repeal of policies that compromise the safety of both officers and inmates," the resolution read. "The elimination or significant revision of the HALT Act is necessary to restore effective management tools within correctional facilities, ensuring that violent individuals can be appropriately disciplined to prevent further harm." The legislature formally expressed its support to officers and urged the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the Governor and state legislators to take immediate action to eliminate or substantially reform HALT. The Sun is awaiting official word on the status of Wednesday night's mediation efforts.
