Hartwell reaches 1,000 points in regular season finale

SCHROON LAKE | Schroon Lake/Newcomb's Austin Hartwell needed just five points to reach 1,000 for his accomplished basketball career. The senior reached the milestone with only 1:12 elapsed in the game, as the Wild Huskies took down Northern Adirondack 72-68 in non-conference play on Friday, Feb. 14. Hartwell knocked down his first shot from the right wing, and he followed with a basket underneath by splitting two defenders in the low post. The Schroon Lake/Newcomb sharpshooter finished with 20 points. Josiah Melville converted a game-high six 3-pointers to finish with 23, and Nate Melville also contributed 20 points. The 11th-ranked Wild Huskies (17-3) were nearly automatic from deep, finishing with 14 made 3-point shots. "Needing just five points, Austin Hartwell scored his 1,000th point tonight on the third basket of the game," Schroon Lake/Newcomb head coach Lee Silvernail said. "That 1,000-point bucket put us up 7-0 and helped us get out to a 24-point first quarter. "NAC is a solid, well-coached team and would make it a game, a sectional-type atmosphere. Every time we would go on a run, they would find a way to keep the game close. "Each time we needed a bucket, someone seemed to step up and hit a big shot. We continue to share the ball and find the open guy." Shane Gilmore paced the Bobcats (10-9) with 23 points. Northern Adirondack's Calvin Magoon and Emmett LaClair also finished in double figures with 17 and 13 points, respectively.
