Horicon Library receives grant and donation for children's books

BRANT LAKE | The Horicon Free Public Library has received a grant of $650 from the Adirondack Foundation Generous Acts Grant and an anonymous donation of $500 to revitalize the children's non-fiction book collection. Just over 100 new books have been acquired with these funds. "This is a much-needed boost," says Library Director, Kawana Smith. "The children's non-fiction book collection has been out of date for quite some time. A number of the books in the collection dated from the 1960s and 1970s. So much has changed over the past few decades, particularly in the field of science." New books include topics on weather, robotics, biographies, computer games, civics, history, dinosaurs, the oceans, and much more. There is something for every age from pre-K to grade 12. Many volumes are in the popular graphic novel format which kids find appealing. "So long as they are reading!" says Smith. Book titles and cover pictures are being posted on the Library's Facebook page as they become available for borrowing. "We can easily double the number of volumes," says Board of Trustees President, Joan Johnson, "and we will be looking for other grant and donation sources to do so in the coming year." Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the library and check out – pun intended – these new volumes. Library hours are Monday and Thursday 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1p.m. The Horicon Free Public Library is a 501(c)3 corporation and operates out of the Horicon Town Hall Building.
