Moriah receives DEC grant

MORIAH | A major municipal project that has been years in the making recently was given the shot in the arm it needs to see completion. The Town of Moriah was recently awarded $50,000 by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to complete an engineering design report for 600 feet of eroding shoreline on Bulwagga Bay Campground and Beach. According to Town Supervisor Matt Brassard, the erosion has resulted in a sizable loss of income over the years. "It is a bad situation," he said. "On the southeast corner (the Point), we have had significant reasons where we have lost multiple campsites." Back in 2014, the Town performed a shoreline stabilization project at the area, going as far as the money would take them. "It was great, but the money should have gone further," Brassard said. "Now, I am hoping with this grant we can get the engineering and we can apply for shovel-ready grant money and shore that area up and stabilize it so we can stop losing real estate." Brassard said the losses thus far are eight lakefront sites, which equates to about $2000 in revenue loss per site, bringing that to $16,000 that the Town doesn't see. "We also make money on electricity, on ice, and garbage," he explained. "The businesses in town also lose money." And there is a demand for the campsites. Right now, there is a 37-person waitlist for Bulwagga Bay alone, with similar lists for other sites in the area. "Every time we lose a campsite, that $2000 theoretically has to be made up by the taxpayers because that is pretty much our only revenue source besides taxes," Brassard noted. Brassard said the engineering design report is expected to begin in late spring of this year.
