Peru uses 11-0 run over final 4:48 to stun Saranac

SARANAC | Maddie Corral's jumper from the short corner with 5.3 seconds remaining supplied Peru with an improbable 50-48 comeback win over Saranac in CVAC girls basketball on Friday, Jan. 3. Corral, a junior, scored all seven of her points during Peru's 11-0 run over the last 4 minutes, 48 seconds. Saranac's last-second three from the wing sailed wide of the rim at the buzzer. Peru, which trailed by as much as 44-35, 46-37 and 48-39 in the fourth quarter, started its final surge with Corral, who converted a second-chance opportunity underneath. Sophomore Reese Duprey knocked down a jump shot from just inside the free-throw line with 3:25 left, and Corral struck again with a 3-pointer to pull Peru within 48-46 with 2:31 to go. Kenzie Whitmarsh tied the game at 48-all with 49 seconds remaining by using the glass to bank home a shot. "I knew coming into this game that it would be a very competitive contest," Saranac head coach Tim Newell said. "The league is very well balanced this year, which makes for some entertaining games." Peru's defense kept Saranac scoreless over the final 5 minutes, 51 seconds. During that span, Peru held Saranac to 0-for-7 from the field, including 0-for-6 from the 3-point line, and created two takeaways. "We have to improve on our rebounding, as we gave them too many second-chance opportunities," Newell said. "Both teams played well in spurts. We are scoring enough to win games, but we need to improve with our defensive intensity." With the victory, Peru avenged its only loss of the season, a 48-33 setback to Saranac at the Clinton Community College Holiday Classic on Dec. 27. Duprey led Peru with 23 points, and sophomore Bella Berry added six points. Assumption University commit Brenna Ducatte anchored Saranac with a game-high 27 points, swishing four 3-pointers in the process. Lily Brown finished in double figures with 10 points.
