Schroon Lake's Comprehensive Plan public hearing is Jan. 15

SCHROON LAKE | A public hearing for the Town of Schroon's Comprehensive Plan will take place in the Schroon Lake Central School Auditorium on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend and offer commentary on the Comprehensive Plan's final draft. The consulting team will provide a brief presentation on the plan and then hear comments from the public. Afterwards, the Comprehensive Plan Committee (CPC) will incorporate public feedback and refer the plan to the Town Board for adoption. The Board is required to hold another public hearing before adoption, so there will be an additional opportunity to provide feedback. The draft plan can be found https://schroon.net/comprehensive-plan-2024/. The Town last went through a comprehensive plan process in 1977. Since then, much has happened in terms of demographics, land use, infrastructure, community needs and more. For instance, one of the recommendations from the 1977 Comprehensive Plan was the need for a Town Hall, and in 1978 the current Town Hall was built. The Comprehensive Plan outlines and defines prospective needs of the community from zoning and land use, housing, town infrastructure, tourism and economic development, lake management and natural resource protection, sustainability and resilience to parks and recreation and arts and culture. It summarizes existing conditions related to each, followed by recommendations. Priorities include a rewrite of the Town Zoning Code, creation of an affordable housing task force, and funding for a new staff position. The goal of the process is to create a shared vision for the Town's future, establish goals to support that vision and identify a series of recommendations to achieve them. Some recommendations may be relatively easy to implement, while others may require more discussion and grant money. Although the Town Board is responsible for the decision-making, public engagement and participation are key elements in the democratic process, meaning resident input and support are essential for successful implementation of many of the plan's goals.
