Breakout season likely for NWCS Girls Basketball

CHESTERTOWN | Replete with experienced athletes, the North Warren Girls Basketball team is expected to experience a successful 2024-25 season. Coach Todd Lawson said his team has a lot of potential considering they have a solid group of veteran players returning this season. "We've had young teams for the past three years, so now we have a good number of seniors, and their leadership is 'on point,'" he said. "They are taking charge." These seniors are backed up with younger players and nearly all of them are experienced players. Commenting that he has a balanced team, Lawson described their attributes: • Senior guard Laci Bruno is a strong outside shooter with sharp court vision and is a great team leader, he said. "On defense Lacy is tough and on offense, Lacy is aggressive, looking to score." • Senior forward Isabella Tucci is a dominant post player. "She is a rebounding machine, and her 'weak side' moves are actually very, very strong," Lawson said. • Senior guard Jessica Paul will be "tormenting opponents with her aggressive defensive play," Lawson said, noting that she will be missing several weeks of the season while recovering from a soccer injury. "We will be missing her the first part of the season," he said. • Junior guard Addison Swan has lightning speed which enables her to "attack the basket with skill and grace,: Lawson said. "Her left-hand finishes have become much stronger," he added. • Junior guard/forward Alexis Smith is a versatile player, Lawson said."Alexis has turned into a scoring threat with her mid-ran\ge jump-shot," the coach said. • Sophomore guard/forward Gianna Tucci, an inside-outside player, is aiming to score more than her older sister Isabella, Lawson said."Gianna plays like she's seven feet tall," he said. • Sophomore guard Maya Higgins played last year as a freshman, Lawson said. "Maya is extremely fast and good at getting steals for us," he said. • Freshman guard Makayla Rounds played summer league with the team's core players, so she's learned most of the team's systems and plays, Lawson said. "Makayla is definitely going to get minutes during competition due to her speed." • Freshman guard Lux Wilkinson has solid potential, Lawson said. "Although this is Lux's first year on varsity, she has a great attitude and has been working extremely hard." Lawson said he's advising his players to adopt an aggressive approach to man-to-man defense. "We're focusing on turning teams over early in the game," he said. This 2024-25 team has a substantial challenge, as North Warren sports teams have been moved up to Class C from Class D due to more favorable enrollment numbers for their high school grades, Lawson said. "This represents a huge change for us in the Section II tournament," he said. "But we're going to try to make a run at it in the playoffs." Lawson added that his players have enthusiasm, team chemistry, and a solid work ethic. "They like to have fun, but when its time to get to work, they really go to work," he said. "They are a great group."
