Sprague wins Essex Co. judgeship

ELIZABETHTOWN | On Election Day, Nov. 5, Essex County voters seated Republican (R) Kristy L. Sprague as Essex County Judge. The long-time district attorney won the 10-year term, besting Democrat (D) Bryan Liam Kennelly, 11,231 to 6,926 votes. Essex County Board of Elections provided unofficial results late Tuesday. Certified results come as absentee ballots are included in the final count. There were not many local races put before voters this year. But state and federal races put incumbents back into office. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D) won her reelection bid with 9,588 votes against Michael Sapraicone (R) and Independent Diane Sare. Challengers received 8,173 and 59 votes respectively. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R) won reelection with 9,508 votes, besting Paula Collins with 8,726 votes. New York State Proposition One was approved by Essex County voters, 9,515 to 8,299. The proposition will add Protections Against Unequal Treatment to the state Constitution. Statewide, voting results came in with 61.5 percent in favor, and 38.5 against. State lawmakers seeking reelection ran unopposed, with 114th District Assemblyman Matt Simpson garnering 8,3324 votes; 115th District Assemblyman Billy Jones winning 4,794 votes from the four Essex County towns he serves. In the 45th District, State Senator Dan Stec earned 12,542 votes from residents in towns he represents. TOWN ELECTIONS David A. Bashaw (R) received 912 votes for town justice in Chesterfield, running unopposed. In Elizabethtown, Adam N. Bailey earned an unexpired term on the Town Council with 336 votes. Chris J. Sorrell (D) won 882 votes for his solo bid for the unexpired term as superintendent of highways in the Town of Jay. In Keene, Henrietta B. Jordan (D) got 515 votes in her bid for town justice, running unopposed. In Moriah, Richard J. Carpenter Sr. (R) garnered 1,617 votes in his bid for town justice, and James Curran (R) received 1,526 votes for town council. Both ran unopposed. Robert E. Ward (Conservative Party) took the town justice seat in Newcomb with 154 votes, unopposed. Town Proposition One in Newcomb was defeated, 111 yes to 183 no votes. The measure sought to change the position of town clerk from an elected to an appointed office. In North Elba, Sean Donovan (D) won the town justice seat with 2,267 votes, besting Brenda J. Smith (R) with 357 votes. In St. Armand, John (JP) O'Neil ran unopposed for an unexpired term on the Town Council and received 478 votes. Francis W. Whitelaw (Integrity) won his bid for town justice with 377 votes, unopposed. The open position for assessor in Schroon fielded no candidates on the Nov. 5 ballot. But two write-in candidates received 36 votes and 6 votes. Essex County Board of Education won't have the names of write-in winners until they begin their canvass next week. Two races in Wilmington drew no candidates and no write-in candidate was named to take on the town justice position. One vote provided a write-in name for assessor. Information about this position will be added when available from the Board of Elections.
