Bridges, Peru outlast PHS in Class B semifinal

PERU | Wyatt Bridges made the most of his opportunities on Friday, Nov. 1 at the Apple Bowl. In the absence of standout running back Sawyer Schlitt, Bridges rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns in Peru's 37-12 win over Plattsburgh High. The victory sent Peru (6-2) to the Section VII Class B championship, where it will face top-seeded Beekmantown (7-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at Plattsburgh. Peru's defense held Plattsburgh to 8-of-27 passing in a game that featured a combined 25 penalties for 213 yards. Peru outgained Plattsburgh by a 298-7 margin on the ground in wet-weather conditions. Peru built a 16-0 lead early on. Plattsburgh (5-4) had a fourth-and-19 from its 8-yard line, where a snap over the punter's head went through the back of the end zone for a safety with 6:42 left in the first quarter. Peru capitalized following the free kick. Jake Frechette delivered a shovel pass to Elijah Hendrix for a 10-yard touchdown. Bridges recorded the first of his four scores midway through the second quarter by punching in a 1-yard run at the goal line. Quarterback Dan Hartmann pulled Plattsburgh within 16-6 by calling his own number and reaching the end zone on a 2-yard keeper. The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter. Bridges took a direct snap and had a convoy of blockers escort him 16 yards to pay dirt, and Plattsburgh's Jahvari Anderson hauled in a backward pass from Hartmann for a 26-yard touchdown. But Plattsburgh was unable to get any closer than 23-12. Bridges iced the game with touchdown runs of 19 and 29 yards with 11:39 and 5:50 remaining, respectively. Frechette added 15 carries for 93 yards, and Chase Carpenter took four handoffs for 49 yards. Hartmann led the Plattsburgh offense with eight completions for 136 yards. His primary targets were George DeJesus and Braeden Calkins with three receptions each. Peru limited Plattsburgh standout Dominic DeAngelo to one catch for 37 yards, and it occurred with 10:59 to go. Excluding the COVID-19 shortened season of spring 2021, Plattsburgh finished with its first winning campaign since 2006.
