Balanced attack carries Moriah over AuSable Valley

MINEVILLE | Cooper Allen, Joe Pelkey and Jacob Mascarenas all reached the end zone in Moriah's 25-0 win over AuSable Valley on Friday, Oct. 4 at Linney Field. Allen snagged a 4-yard touchdown pass from Pelkey with 3:01 left in the first quarter, and Mascarenas took over from there. The senior recorded touchdown runs of 12 and 2 yards, the latter coming with 8.4 seconds remaining in the first half, to balloon the Vikings' lead to 18-0. Pelkey completed the scoring summary with a 22-yard touchdown run just after the midway mark of the third quarter. The senior quarterback also finished with six completions for 79 yards. "I mean, the hard work in practice is what led to (the fast start)," Pelkey said. "You know, running through the plays in practice, we have to give our all every time. Once we get to game time, it's just all about executing and making sure you're doing your job on the play." Moriah (2-2, 2-2 CVAC) had a balanced effort, as eight different players figured into the box score with rushing or receiving statistics. "Yeah, it's amazing. Every night, you never know who it's going to be," Mascarenas said. "We got a lot of guys on this team that can make plays, and the defense has got to account for every one of those guys. "Most of the time, it's not me, but I'm fine with that and so is every other kid. They don't care about stats, and that's nice because it's what we need for the team." The Vikings' defense, which allowed 64 points through their first three games, pitched their first shutout of the season. They held the Patriots to 60 yards. "We're starting to build confidence as the year's going on," Pelkey said. "That was a huge game for us to shut them out." Isaac White totaled 12 carries for 62 yards, and Mascarenas chipped in 39 yards and two touchdowns. "We've been working a lot on different blocking schemes, cleaning things up," Moriah head coach Casey Nephew said. "Seemed to be a little cleaner this week. Our line played much better, and our backs blocked better this week." AuSable Valley (0-5, 0-4 CVAC) was held scoreless for a third time. It was forced to punt on five occasions, turned the football over on downs three times and had one turnover. The Patriots got in the red zone twice – once in each half – but the two drives fizzled out. Jon Fletcher led AuSable Valley's offense with 10 carries and 43 yards, and Mike Lewallen ran the ball five times for 20 yards.
