PLATTSBURGH | The City of Plattsburgh has announced that the 2024 beach season was marked by a series of exciting events, significant revenue gains, and plans for future improvements that will continue to enhance the community experience at Plattsburgh City Beach. 2024 Event Highlights Plattsburgh City Beach hosted a variety of successful events this season, drawing thousands of attendees. Key events included: Total Solar Eclipse Viewing in April, which attracted over 4,000 visitors and featured the unveiling of an Eclipse Commemorative Mural. The North Country Health and Wellness Running Festival in May. The Mayor's Cup Sailing Regatta and Festival in July. The Beach Wrestling Tournament in July. The Community Rock Show in August. These events not only celebrated the beauty of the beach but also provided diverse recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Moving forward, the City plans to expand programming with regular activities such as beach volleyball, yoga, and DJ sets in collaboration with local organizations. Record Revenue Offsets Operational Costs The 2024 season saw the highest parking and beach pass revenues collected in the last four years. Revenue from parking meter payments reached $110,705.85, with an additional $6,500 generated through the ParkMobile app, and $3,270.00 from Paid Seasonal Parking Permits, bringing the total seasonal revenue from parking enforcement to $120,475.85. After processing fees, net revenue stood at $115,054.43. This marks a significant increase compared to last year's net revenue of $88,925.45. This substantial income has helped offset operational costs, including paying lifeguard salaries and maintaining facilities. The City plans to reinvest part of the revenue into further improvements to the beach, ensuring it remains a safe, attractive destination for years to come. Future Beach Improvements Looking ahead, Plattsburgh City Beach is set to undergo significant upgrades aimed at enhancing the visitor experience: Bathhouse Renovations: Construction of new bathrooms and changing facilities within the main vendor building is scheduled for completion by spring 2025. Boardwalk Replacement: With safety concerns due to missing boards and protruding nails, plans are underway to replace the current boardwalk. A 2022 grant will fund water quality and accessibility improvements for the beach, with construction details to be announced. Picnic Area Updates: Hazardous trees will be removed, new grills installed, and plans are being discussed to restore the gazebo and add a larger pavilion. Signage Improvements: In response to confusion regarding swim zones and safety concerns, plans are underway to improve the beach's signage system. New signs will clearly mark swim zones and provide instructions in both English and French. Additional signage will designate kite and wind surfer launch areas. As Plattsburgh City Beach continues to grow as a hub for recreation and events, these improvements and partnerships will ensure it remains an important destination for both residents and visitors.
