Theresa McCaffrey

AUSABLE | Theresa was born on Sept. 23, 1947, the youngest child of Gerard and Cecile (Allard) Garso. Theresa had her first lessons in retail behind the counter of her parents' general store in AuSable Forks, N.Y., and she carried her early training in customer service into a long and successful career in the retail and hospitality industries. Whether managing a restaurant or motel or behind a cash register, Theresa's high standards and positive attitude always shone out, and her customers became her friends. Theresa married Edward McCaffrey on April 26, 1980. Ed and Theresa were true partners in life and also in business, enjoying every new adventure together. They met through a friend while Theresa was working at Santa's Workshop, North Pole, N.Y., and Ed was working down the road at High Falls Gorge. Work took them from New York to New Jersey, then South Carolina, where Theresa fought and won a battle against cancer. Eventually they realized their dream of a beach bungalow in Vero Beach, Fla., where they joyfully welcomed visitors from up North. Theresa's retail career came full circle as she worked for Publix Supermarkets until her retirement. Ed cared bravely for her through the challenges of the following years, eventually finding a loving home for Theresa at the Teresian House in the Carmel Gardens Memory Care Unit, where Ed visited daily. Theresa's life was one of love and joy, of great faith and a fierce commitment to her huge extended family. Although Theresa had no children of her own, they reveled in all their many nieces and nephews, sharing joys and sorrows, celebrating milestones, and turning every family occasion into a party. Theresa also always kept her roots in AuSable Forks, nurturing her old friendships while making and keeping new friends everywhere she and Ed went. Theresa wasproud of her Canadian heritage; she spoke French fluently and relished visits to Quebec to spend time with her Canadian relatives. Theresa is survived by her loving husband, Ed; her brother Andre Garso and sisters Annie Sorrell and Helene (Casey) Marshall; many cousins, including Louis Garso, Mary Francis and Don Savage; and dozens of nieces and nephews. She has joined in heaven her parents and sisters Lucille Light and Rita Baker. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Name Church, AuSable Forks, N.Y., on Sept. 28, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. All are invited to visit with Theresa's family before Mass at 10:30 in the church. Reception immediately following next door at the Parish Center. Burial will be at a later date.
