Standout season expected for Cougars boys soccer

CHESTERTOWN | For the first time in recent history, the North Warren Boys Soccer team didn't lose a single player to graduation. This provides a distinct advantage as the Cougars delve into their season: they have a deep roster of experienced players who have developed team chemistry. No less than 13 of the team's 17 players are veterans, and eight of these athletes are seniors. Predicted to lead the scoring this year are returning offense standouts junior Coleman Swartz, seniors James Conway and Gio Marron, as well as sophomores Connor Hill and George Hilton. Securing the defense this season will be experienced athletes seniors Tyler Hitchcock, sophomore Patrick Viele, and senior Theigen Plumley — joined by veteran senior Eli Robinson, who missed the entire 2023 season due to injuries. Last year's goaltender Will Lindsley, a junior, is returning to protect the net for 2024. Additional returning players include senior Jeremiah Granger, sophomore Logan Coyle and freshman Sawyer Gadjo. Some newcomers to watch for in 2024 will include juniors Nicholas Pendell and Daniel Mattison as well as seniors Hunter Conger and Isaiah Tyrell. All are expected to bring new energy to the team. Also, the team welcomes a new assistant coach this fall, Chris Lail, coach Jim Conway said. "The addition of Coach Lail to assist us will result in much more productive training and preparation as we enter the 2024 season," he said. Coach Conway said his team was looking forward to a very competitive season. "Along with their experience, the returning players will bring back a tremendous amount of talent and skill," he said. NORTH WARREN 3, HUDSON FALLS 1 The Cougars began their season Sept. 4 with a solid 3-1 win over Hudson Falls. Midway through the first half, Tyler Hitchcock passed to fullback Patrick Viele, who drilled the ball from about 45 yards out, over the Tigers' goalies' head into the net. Minutes later, Hudson Falls retaliated with a goal despite the Cougars dominating the action. About halfway into the second period, Connor Hill stole the ball from an opponent and kicked a rifle shot from 35 yards away with his left foot past the Tigers' goalie into the net. Later, James Conway took a free kick from 30 yards out, and the ball bounced off the far post into the goal. Throughout the game, the Cougars had many shots on goal, but the Tigers' goalie repeatedly dove to block the shots, Coach Conway said, noting that among his players, defender Eli Robinson played well after being sidelined for the 2023-24 season due to an injury. "Our long-distance shots were working for us," Conway said of the 2024-25 debut game. "It was a great way to start the season."
