Larry Converse selected for NYS Basketball Hall of Fame

GLENS FALLS | Larry Converse, longtime boys basketball coach at St. John's Academy and Seton Catholic, has been selected for induction in the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. The news was made public Friday by Rene LeRoux, founder and executive director at the Hall of Fame. Converse got his head coaching start at St. John's for the 1985-86 season and continued there until the school merged with Mount Assumption Institute to form Seton Catholic before the 1989-90 academic year. Converse, 75, completed his 35th season at Seton Catholic in February. He scored his 400th coaching victory in February 2020, when the Knights recorded a 66-26 win over Bolton in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference play. Unofficially, he currently stands at 431 wins. Converse has guided teams to nine sectional championships – one with St. John's in 1988 – and eight with Seton Catholic in 1990, 1994, 2002, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2022. In 2002, Converse led the Knights to wins over Section X's Norwood-Norfolk and Section II's Galway to land Seton Catholic in the NYSPHSAA Class C final four at the Glens Falls Civic Center. There, it suffered a loss to eventual state champion Blind Brook from Section I. During the 2003-04 season, the Knights ran the table in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, finishing with an 18-0 mark in Division II. Unofficially, Converse has coached six 1,000-point scorers, including Jeremy Dubay (1990), Scott Silva (1991), Mark Rabideau (2004), Kevin Murray (2017), Neil Yang (2019) and Aiden Pearl (2024). He previously served as a volunteer assistant with Plattsburgh State under head coach Larry Cowan from 1989 to 1995. His son Ryan is the boys basketball coach at Beekmantown, where he took over in 2003. Converse and the Class of 2025 are slated to be inducted in March at Cool Insuring Arena, formerly the Glens Falls Civic Center. The New York State Basketball Hall of Fame is organized and operated by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. The Hall of Fame, according to its site, honors the best coaches in the history of basketball in the state. Additionally, it honors individuals who have made state-wide contributions to the game.
