Samuel F. Vilas Home's enhanced assisted living addition now open

PLATTSBURGH | The Samuel F. Vilas Home, the well-known historic adult home located on the corner of Cornelia and Beekman streets in Plattsburgh, has announced the opening of its brand-new enhanced assisted living addition after a multi-year construction project. Featuring 70 new assisted living rooms with fully accessible private baths, kitchenettes, an emergency call bell system, and full furnishings, the new enhanced assisted living community offers residents a bright, spacious and dignified setting along with a wider array of personalized care services than were historically offered. As a licensed enhanced assisted living facility, the Samuel F. Vilas Home is now able to provide residents with select skilled nursing services – either as they age or upon admission - including medical equipment management, specialized diabetic care and maintenance, incontinence care, assistance with transfers and ambulation, and nursing assessments, among others. This is in addition to 24/7 personal care assistance, medication management, daily meals and snacks, laundry and housekeeping services, case management services as well as local transportation. "We're excited to announce that we're open and now able to offer enhanced assisted living services at the Vilas Home," stated owner and operator Eli Schwartzberg. "Our residents now have the ability to receive skilled nursing care right in their suites - which means if a resident experiences a medical event, an illness or simply has increasing needs due to normal aging – they can receive a higher level of care right in their room and remain at the Vilas Home for longer than they were previously allowed to under the Home's former license. This really impacts a resident's quality of life, leads to continuity of care and is great for local families trying to keep their loved ones in the community." The new home features a grand two-story dining room, an ice cream parlor, a salon, spacious living rooms and common areas with two elevators that deliver residents to the home's three floors. Additional amenities including a physical therapy gym with a therapy pool, an activities room, library, and a new main entrance and lobby with four-season porches, as well as an outdoor courtyard with a walking loop, are now under construction. These additional features, along with the historically sensitive renovation of the original 1888 Vilas Home building into two secure memory care units, is underway and expected to become available next year. The Vilas Home is owned and operated by Eli and Emily Schwartzberg, who also own and operate the Champlain Valley Senior Community (CVSC), an enhanced assisted living and memory care community located in Willsboro, N.Y. The couple opened CVSC in 2013 after an extensive and historically sensitive renovation of the former Willsboro Grade School. Both CVSC and the Vilas Home are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Project financing for the ongoing construction is being provided by Champlain National Bank in partnership with Glens Falls National Bank and Community Bank in addition to private investment. The Vilas Home is also the recipient of a PILOT through the Clinton County IDA and has partnered with the Plattsburgh Housing Authority and the City of Plattsburgh to receive a Community Development Block Grant.
