Moderate-income housing coming to Keene

KEENE | Four newly constructed 900 square feet, two-bedroom cape-style homes will soon be available in Keene for people with moderate incomes in relation to others in the area. Construction will be completed for two in October or later and two more possibly in December. They will have one floor with an unfinished concrete basement. They will be constructed in such a way a second floor can be constructed more easily, should the homeowner eventually want that. Adirondack Roots, a nonprofit housing organization based in Elizabethtown that serves Essex, Clinton and Hamilton counties, is funding the construction with the assistance of New York State's Affordable Homeownership Opportunity Program. Executive Director of Adirondack Roots Megan Murphy says its purpose is to help alleviate the area's housing shortage of affordable housing. She says the homes will cost $160,000. The maximum income for one person purchasing a home is $72,480 and for four it is $103,560. They will be located at Both Meadow Trail across from the town hall and a preschool and childhood center. Should an individual not have enough income to afford the mortgage, counselors at Adirondack Roots will offer advice on options to afford the home. But building affordable homes is only a part of the good work this group does. They also advise folks on obtaining vouchers to afford rent, avoid foreclosure, assistance purchasing a home for first-time buyers and paying for crucial repairs to their home should the homeowner be unable to pay a contractor themselves. The organization has an annual operating budget of $3 million and depends on grants for its funding. Murphy has been executive director since May 2023 and says, "Here at Adirondack Roots, we are grateful to be able to work in our communities improving the quality of our housing."
