Art students bring peace and beauty to CVPH's R5

CHAZY | "I think it's really cool, because I know that I helped contribute and I know it might help people and make people more relaxed." Grace Rocha, a sixth grader at Chazy Elementary School, has a great reason to be proud. She and her fellow classmates in Stephanie Lefand's art class are helping bring peace to families visiting loved ones on our Med/Surg and Oncology inpatient floor, which many of you know as R5. They created two paintings that are now on display in our solarium, where family members and friends of our patients will go for a break while visiting. "Many of our patients on this floor are dealing with tough illnesses and nearing the end of their life. So, it's a time that is very stressful and difficult for their loved ones. Wanting to do anything we could to bring a little more comfort and peace to them, I thought artwork would be a great way to do that," says Nicole Daniels, RN and Nurse Manager on R5. Daniels worked with The Foundation of CVPH to get some funding to support an art project and contacted Lefand at the elementary school. Lefand was excited to get her sixth graders to create two murals for us featuring the North Country's high peaks, iconic Adirondack chairs, boats and lakes. "We've been painting all throughout the year on different art projects, and they've shown quite an interest and talent in it," Lefand explains. "I'm very proud of them being able to make a mark in this community in such a special and meaningful way that will last a long time." The youngsters spent weeks in class and even free time after school working on the murals, learning about different tools, techniques and brush strokes to create different effects. The result is something that make a big difference with patients and the loved ones who are visiting. "This art is so beautiful that it makes our solarium feel more like home for families. Providing that little bit of comfort in what can be such a difficult time for them makes such a difference. We're already hearing from people who love it and are thankful that it's on display," says Daniels.
