Westport's Heritage House Art Exhibit unveiled

WESTPORT | Art aesthetes will want to visit the Westport Heritage House Visitor & Community Center, located at 6459 Main St. (Route 9) across from Ballard Park. Until Labor Day it is featuring Spirit of Place, a free exhibition of some 150 artistic expressions created by 53 local artists. The pieces will be available for purchase, with Heritage House receiving 30 percent of the proceeds. It is free and is open every day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., except Sundays when it is open from 1 to 3 p.m. and Tuesdays when it is closed. Some 350 persons visited the Heritage House and its annual art exhibition last year. The house operates independently but is under the umbrella of the Westport-Wadhams Community Alliance (WWCA). The title of show, Spirit of Place, was chosen to reflect and dovetail with the distinctive atmosphere of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks, including its aesthetics and physical attributes. Most of the art is paintings, with a few photographs and fiber expressions. Chairman of the Spirit of Place Committee at Heritage House Lora Langston says this year she particularly admires the some 12 floral pieces, which are paintings along with one photograph. "They have unique characteristics." Langston says she also appreciates the three black and white graphite (pencil) drawings by Westport resident Dan Keegan. They are "really beautiful, abstract" and "different." And another is a painting titled "Amish Haystack" by Brett Giaconia of Port Henry. "It's really pretty." And it is "filled with colorful light and details." Langston says "The Spirit of Place Art Exhibit has become a Westport tradition. I love the show because it reflects the creativity found in the Champlain Valley and because it displays such a variety of expressive works. When you're in Westport, please stop by!" Langston says the Heritage House has an annual operating budget of $17,600, of which Westport defrays $3,000. To fund its operations, it depends mostly on donations and will soon be applying for grants.
