Altona Fire Co., Renewal Taskforce ready for Parade & Field Day

ALTONA | Community members have been busy the past few months, trimming, painting and clearing parks and common recreation areas throughout their town. The newly formed Altona Community Renewal Taskforce set their sights for midsummer and Altona Volunteer Fire Department's Parade and Field Day on July 14. Long term, their goal is to renew and take care of places people like to play in and gather at in town. In May, the organization, cleaned winter debris off the community pickleball and basketball courts. On June 1, they painted picnic tables and the fire department's pavilion, which is used through summer and fall for many town events and community gathering. They've designed orange t-shirts with a sunburst: Altona Community Renewal Taskforce, and on the back it says "There's no community without u and i." They raise funds through bottle drives and raffles, and ask friends and neighbors for input on what more they can do for community. Alexis Duffy helps coordinate events using social media. In the spring, they held the First Annual Altona Cleanup Day, which Duffy said was a huge success. "We ended up having about 50 volunteers and we were able to clean Station Street, Bloomer Street, Brunell Road, Rock Road, Vassar Road, Harvey Road, part of the Duley Road and part of Irona (town) Road," she summed of their effort, which pulled about a ton of trash off the roadsides. "Thank you again to everyone involved in helping make Altona a better place to live," Duffy said. The group raised over $1,700 with a community-wide bottle drive. And they plan to walk together in the first ever Altona Field Day parade. Their effort is drawing attention from friends and neighbors in town and beyond. Sharon McPherson commended their sense of renewed community spirit with an old adage: "Many hands make light work," she said via social media. "So nice to seeing everyone working together as a team. Need more of that in this world." The Altona Volunteer Fire Department is inviting friends and neighbors to town, putting final preparations in place for the parade and first annual Field Day. Events begin as the parade starts, 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 14. The parade begins at the Rainbow Wedding & Banquet Hall parking lot off of Irona Road, and turns right at Devil's Den Road, then left onto Station Street, continuing onto Bloomer Street and right at the fire station. Announcers and the judging stand will be at the fire station, Fire Chief Cameron Garrand said in a news release. The parade route turns back onto Devil's Den Road and ends at the Rainbow Wedding & Banquet Hall. Afterward, the fire company is hosting a chicken barbecue to start about noon. There will be a craft fair with exhibitors, live music featuring Taylor LaValley, and family entertainment, including bounce houses for kids all afternoon. The Altona fire station is at 480 Devil's Den Rd. Tire department personnel will help with traffic control, as several roads through Altona will be closed for the parade as it winds through town, including a stretch of Devil's Den, Miner Farm Road between Joe Wood/Brunell roads, Bloomer Street and Station street. The chief expects the parade will last approximately one hour.
