Westport-Wadhams Day returns July 6

WESTPORT | The Town of Westport will be jumping with family-friendly fun on Saturday, July 6, cause it's the day for the annual Westport-Wadhams Day. To celebrate our founding fathers signing America's most important and beneficial document, the one-hour parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Essex County Fairgrounds located on Route 9 between Sisco Street and Fairgrounds Way. It ends at the lawn aside the Westport Library just before the beautiful lakeside Ballard Park located at 6466 Main St. The theme of the parade is space, in recognition of the recent total solar eclipse. Officials at the Westport-Wadham Community Alliance (WWCA), who arranged the parade, hope folks wear costumes of their favorite astronomical object, such as stars, comets or planets. The parade will feature vintage or antique cars; stilt walkers; firetrucks; EMTs; residents: local businesses and organizations. The grand marshals are Nona Hoskins and her daughter Tammy Johnson, each of whom are involved with the food bank called Westport Food Shelf. The day will also feature live music; a used book sale in Ballard Park; tag sale; a chair raffle outside JAMBS on Main located at 6476 Main Street to benefit the WWCA; Michigan hot dogs, nachos, and a silent auction at Westport Federated Church, located at seven Baybreeze Lane; a concert and square dance at Ballard Park; an art exhibit called Spirit of Place at the Westport Heritage House Visitor and Community Center located at 6459 Main Street; an axe throwing booth in the parking area of the Portside at the Westport Marina, located at 20 Washington Street, East Westport; and hamburgers will be available. And there's plenty to do for the little ones. The day features a scavenger hunt at the bottom of Lee Park by the playground, located at 14 Marks Road; a bouncy house and washable tattoos aside the library; a puppet show and puppet-making workshop at the Heritage House; Pipsqueak the Clown, face painting, arts and activities outside of the Portside restaurant. And the big enchilada, the fireworks, blast off at 9:15 p.m. at Lee Park. Clayton Reaser, president of the WWCA, says the day costs some $19,000. It is paid for with funds provided by the Town of Westport; WWCA; vendors; grants; and donations.
