Schroon's Boathouse Theater unveils historic marker

SCHROON LAKE | Friday, June 14, was a day of celebration and victory when the New York State Augustus Bogle Historic Marker was unveiled in front of 140 guests in the garden of the lakeside building known as Schroon's Boathouse Theater. Granted by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the recognizable shiny blue and yellow acknowledgment came after two years of dedicated research on behalf of the Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society. "It was a beautiful sun-filled day and a milestone in Schroon Lake history," noted Brenda Borquist, member of the society who served on the committee that achieved the notable distinction. The ceremony was attended by 20 Augustus Bogle descendants, including Barbara Connor, great-great-granddaughter and her children and grandchildren. The program was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem led by fourth- and sixth-grade students, respectively, of Schroon Lake Central School. Built circa 1900, the boathouse and its founder, Augustus Bogle, were detailed by Laura Dewey, and testimonies of participation in saving the boathouse in "The 1976 Battle of the Boathouse - demolition or salvation" was given by Lisa Reid, Lillian Richardson, and Roger Friedman. A letter from Ann Breen Metcalfe was read telling of her childhood experiences living near the boathouse. A recorded testimony by Joe Provancha closed the ceremony with the words "They wanted to tear it down, but the walls would not come down." Speakers with congratulatory remarks and acknowledgments included Supervisor Meg Wood, SNHHS Vice President Bill Tribou, Diane O'Connor of LARCH, letter from the Pomeroy Foundation, and Town Historian Loris Clark. Darren Woods of Seagle Festival, and Susan Conroy also gave accounts of their experiences contributing to the Boathouse Theater performances.
