Husband charged in death of devoted local mother

PERU | A Peru man is in custody accused of strangling a local mother and grandmother whose body was found inside a trunk in a car rental agency parking lot. As condolences poured in for Lisa Dashnaw-Tyrell, law enforcement across the area launched an intensive multi-day search for Scott A. Tyrell in connection with the Peru native's tragic death. Tyrell, who also grew up in Peru and knew Dashnaw since childhood, was captured Friday roughly three days after the tragic discovery and was arrested for second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse. He was arraigned in Peru Town Court Friday afternoon and remanded to Clinton County Jail without bail. He has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court in June. New York State Police confirmed that Tyrell, 58, was the last known operator of the vehicle where his wife's remains were found. He was located during an early-morning traffic stop in the City of Plattsburgh, where City Police, State Police and Clinton County Sheriff's quickly converged and took him into custody. Tyrell was transported for medical attention with a self-inflicted neck wound before being formally interviewed and charged. The investigation is being conducted by the New York State Police, Plattsburgh Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff's Department, and the Clinton County District Attorney's Office. Police said Dashnaw's body was found after Enterprise reclaimed an overdue car at a residence in the City of Plattsburgh under suspicious circumstances. State Police led the multi-agency search for Tyrell as law enforcement poured over his Reservoir Road home in the days following the murder and police searched for their prime suspect. As the search continued, Dashnaw's loved ones mourned the deep and senseless loss, calling for justice in her murder and plastering Tyrell's picture across social media in hopes of his quick capture. An outpouring of support has rallied behind her family, including from staff and leadership at CVPH where Dashnaw built a 25-year career as a dietary nutritionist. Dashnaw is survived by three children, 10 grandchildren and a large and loving extended family across the area. Services are being handled by Hamilton Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life planned for a later date.
