North Country School brings free theater to community

LAKE PLACID | North Country School (NCS) is gearing up for a celebratory week at the end of this month as it prepares to debut its uplifting comedic spring theatrical production "PUFFS, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic" to its community. Following these free public performances, NCS will celebrate its graduating class of 2024—the school's 86th commencement since its founding in 1938. NCS alumna and assistant teaching professor in the Department of Dramatic Arts at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Aubrey Snowden will address the graduates. In "PUFFS," author Matt Cox reimagines the beloved Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ through the eyes of the Hufflepuff students. The play follows the story of Wayne Hopkins and his group of seemingly unextraordinary classmates as they navigate seven years of epic adventures. "'PUFFS" provides a new and hilarious perspective into the life of the Hufflepuff students in the magical world of Harry Potter™," said theater teacher Courtney Allen. "The thing I'm most excited about is the sheer magic our students and our staff are bringing to the stage with this production." The audience can expect to be wowed not only by magical acting, but by a number of elements North Country students and staff have worked together to create, including: Original music composed by the student theater band and Music Teacher Gwen Tracy Elaborate stagecraft with flying and battling soul-sucking security guards built by Technical Theater Teacher Larry Robjent and students Cutting-edge light projection mapping designed by NCS alum Anthony Fernandez and filmed by staff member Echo Only. While containing some mature themes, "PUFFS" is a family-friendly experience that celebrates friendship, self-discovery and the idea that everyone has an important role to play in this world. "Our students have worked incredibly hard to capture the spirit of the story through their performances. We encourage our local neighbors to join us for our public performances," said Allen. Attendance is free and open to the public on Wednesday and Thursday, May 22 and 23, at 7 p.m. in the Walter Breeman Performing Arts Center (WallyPAC) on the NCS campus.
