Inmate sentenced to 22 years for C.O. assaults

PLATTSBURGH | An incarcerated individual has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for assaulting two officers at Clinton Correctional Facility. Joseph McCrimmon returned to Clinton County Court April 18 when Judge William A. Favreau handed down the stiff aggregate term. A jury had convicted Joseph McCrimmon in February on charges of first-degree attempted assault, attempted aggravated assault on a peace officer, second-degree attempted assault, two counts of second-degree assault, three counts of promoting prison contraband and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The charges stem from incidents inside the maximum security facility in May 2022 when McCrimmon threw hot liquid on an officer, causing first and second-degree burns on his face. When the Correction Emergency Response Team responded, McCrimmon kicked another officer and struck him several times in the head with a food can tied in a sock and bit him in the hand. McCrimmon, who was serving a 15-year determinate sentence on rape, sexual abuse and gun charges, was also found in possession of two sharpened contraband weapons. During the sentencing, Judge Favreau described the dangerous conditions correctional officers face on a daily basis as he sentenced McCrimmon as a second-felony offender. In addition to the combined 22-year prison term, which will be served consecutive to his current incarceration, McCrimmon will also serve a lengthy term of post-release supervision. The case was prosecuted by Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Vivian Joo.
