Peru man facing murder charge as local mother mourned

PERU | Family, friends and the community are now mourning a young mother as her accused killer is behind bars facing a murder charge. Krysten E. Remy was found dead inside a Jenkins Street residence Wednesday afternoon when police performed a welfare check, finding the 23-year-old Peru woman lifeless with her 8-month-old daughter nearby. As New York State Police launched an immediate investigation, Clinton County Sheriff's Office provided key information into their prime suspect's whereabouts. With the typically quiet street filled with law enforcement and neighbors left reeling in the shocking violence, Sheriff's officials informed State Police of an accident near the Canadian border involving Remy's boyfriend several hours earlier. Around 9:30 a.m., an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent located Kevin S. Kosza in a field near an accident close to the border. Border Patrol agents rendered aid to Kosza who was transported to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital for medical treatment. Just hours later, as Remy's body was discovered, Kosza was identified as the primary suspect and taken into custody for second-degree murder as he was released from the hospital. Authorities believe the couple was involved in an altercation inside the home when Remy was brutally stabbed to death. Kosza, 27, was also charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday morning and is now being held at Clinton County Jail without bail as the investigation continues. Services for Remy have not yet been arranged as her family copes with the sudden and devastating loss. An autopsy at Glens Falls Hospital Friday officially ruled her death a homicide. State Police are asking anyone who lives on Jenkins and surrounding streets to check security cameras for any suspicious activity. The homicide investigation is being conducted by the New York State Police, assisted by the Clinton County District Attorney's Office, Clinton County Sheriff's Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As the couple's young daughter is now in the care of heartbroken relatives, a GoFundMe was launched to help with expenses of her care and college. Community members and friends quickly rallied around the child's maternal grandfather as he now steps in for her care. The GoFundMe raised more than $7,000 in just 12 hours as coworkers and friends supported the family in the difficult days ahead.
