Susan Marcy Greenafage Brand

CHESTERTOWN | Susan Marcy Greenafage Brand, beloved mother, wife and grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born on Jan. 14, 1949, in South Hampton Long Island, N.Y., she spent the first 29 years of her life in Long Island before meeting her husband of 46 years, Joseph M. Brand, in Lake Placid, N.Y. She then spent the rest of her life in the beautiful Adirondacks in upstate New York. Susan was a woman with many talents. After getting her cosmetologist license, she worked in a few different salons on Long Island. In her early twenties, she joined a band, 'Day Old Tradition,' and performed with them for close to nine years. Susan loved to sing and had a beautiful voice and man followers. She was also a talented artist who loved to paint and draw. She was a fantastic decorator, with an eye for interior design, and her Christmas tree decorating was unmatched! After meeting her husband, Joe, they married and settled and started a family with three children. Of all the jobs that Susan has had, her most cherished was that of being a mom. Susan was the most amazing mother and grandmother. She so loved her husband, Joe, who, when she was battling her cancer for the past seven years, was the most compassionate caregiver to her and never left her side. While living in upstate New York, Susan had operated different salons for close to 35 years combined, one being in Schroon Lake, N.Y., and the other in Chestertown, N.Y., with her daughter Gabrielle. Susan loved her craft of doing hair. She wasn't only a beautician; she was a caregiver, a therapist and a magician. When Susan wasn't working you would often find her engaging in one of her many hobbies. Knitting was a true passion, which she really took to during her days of recovery from her stem cell transplant. She so enjoyed knitting. Oh, the hats and Afghans she created! Susan also was an amazing cook, making the best homemade soups and cornflake chicken you'll ever have, among other wonderful dishes. One of her other favorite things to do was tend to her gardens. Susan had the most beautiful gardens every spring and summer, with many passersby commenting on how beautiful and bright they were. If you were looking for her, most likely that's where she would be! Susan was the most amazing women. She loved with all her heart. Her family was everything to her. We couldn't have asked for a better mother, wife, grandmother and friend. She truly was one of a kind and will be missed immensely. Her spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched. Aside from her parents, Marion and Andrew Greenafage, Susan is predeceased by her brothers Peter and David, and also by her beautiful grandson Cameron Michael Kuba. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Joseph M. Brand; her three children, Gabrielle Kuba, Joseph A. Brand, and Brittani Kinsley; her three remaining grandchildren, Noah Kinsley and Liah and Eli Kuba; along with her siblings, Cathy Tilley, Gayle Galdorisi, and her brother, James Goroleski; along with many extended family members and friends. A celebration of life is planned for Susan on May 18 at Dynamite Hill in Chestertown, N.Y. Details will follow as the time gets closer.
