Brooklyn man charged with murder in Elizabethtown shooting

ELIZABETHTOWN | A Brooklyn man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of William Ball. New York State Police executed multiple search warrants April 1, resulting in the arrest of Qwavon M. Harris, 28. Harris was taken into custody at the Elizabethtown Stewart's Shop by Essex County Sheriff's officials shortly after the 5:30 a.m. shooting on Lincoln Pond Road. Ball, 40, of Port Henry was found deceased inside his truck after an altercation, police said. Harris was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Elizabethtown Town Court Tuesday afternoon and remanded to Essex County Jail without bail. On Tuesday, an autopsy was performed at Glens Falls Hospital, finding Ball's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. His death was officially ruled a homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and State Police ask anyone who lives on Lincoln Pond Road to check their security cameras for any suspicious activity on the roadway early Monday morning. Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at 518-873-2777. State Police were assisted by the Essex County District Attorney's office as well as the Essex County Sheriff's Department and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers during the initial response, day-long search for evidence and ongoing investigation. Lincoln Pond Road remained closed in both directions until 9 p.m. as authorities continued to pore over evidence and investigate the shooting, which sent shock waves through the close-knit community and rural neighborhood as word of the tragedy spread. Ball, a lifelong resident of the Port Henry area, was a construction worker and is survived by a large extended family in the area. Services are expected to be announced in the coming days.
