Solar eclipse viewing events scheduled

SOUTHERN ADIRONDACKS | Many thousands of people are expected to descend on the tri-county region served by The Sun to witness the total solar eclipse on mid-afternoon Monday, April 8 — a celestial phenomenon that is not expected to occur again until 2044. Communities across Essex, Hamilton and Warren counties are prime destinations, prompting their businesses and local governments to hold eclipse viewing parties and other associated events. • Gore Mountain ski center in North Creek will be hosting a party on the base lodge's sundeck, complete with a deejay playing Pink Floyd's "On the Dark Side of the Moon" as the sky is darkened for several minutes. Solar eclipse safety glasses will be provided for the free party which starts at 1:30 p.m. All the mountain's trails and lifts close between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The maximum eclipse occurs between 3:24 p.m. and 3:28 p.m. and the event is over at 4 p.m. Lifts will not be open for non-skiers. • Newcomb NY in southern Essex County will be hosting their gathering titled "Total Eclipse in the Heart" from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in their town Information Center parking lot. Food and beverages will be available. Preceding this party at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 7 at Newcomb Visitors Center, Astrophysics professor Luke Keller will present a program regarding the solar eclipse. Following at 4 p.m., the Newcomb Fire Co. will be holding its "Lights Out Chili Contest" at their firehall nearby on state Route 28. • Frontier Town Gateway off Northway Exit 29 in North Hudson will be hosting eclipse viewers. The partial eclipse begins at 2:13 p.m. and reaches its totality at 3:26 p.m., lasting for about two minutes. Eclipse glasses and EV chargers are available and a gas station is nearby. Paradox Brewery adjacent to Frontier Town is holding an eclipse party from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with live music and food specials. See their Instagram page for details. • The hamlet of Indian Lake will be holding a two-day eclipse festival Saturday April 7 and Sunday April 8 with an artisan fair, and three eclipse viewing gatherings including one at Blue Mountain Lake Beach. The local movie theater will be screening "Little Shop of Horrors" through the weekend, and a local church will be serving up homemade chili on April 8. Various businesses are also holding special events. • Speculator NY is also a destination, as Lemon Tree Brewing in the hamlet will host eclipse viewers from noon to 9 p.m. on April 8. • Saranac Lake Village on the eastern edge of Essex County will be holding its community-wide "Solar Fest" viewing party on Main Street with live music, art exhibits, food and beverages. Other gatherings are expected at Riverfront Park, Berkeley Green, and many local enterprises. • Silver Bay Conference Center & Family Retreat in the town of Hague will be holding four days of activities from Friday April 5 through Monday April 8, ending with their eclipse-viewing gathering. See Silverbay.org for details. • Warrensburg's Richards Library is hosting a presentation by naturalist Dean Moore on the total eclipse at 3 p.m. Friday April 5, followed by a game of Jeopardy. Eclipse glasses and viewer tips will be given out at the program. ADVISORY: People attending solar eclipse events in the Adirondacks should be aware that with large crowds expected to visit the Adirondacks, disruptions in cell service may occur, and traffic is likely to be quite heavy on major roadways including I-87 Northway, and state routes Route 9, 9N, 28, 8 and 149. State authorities have warned that gridlock may occur and they advise travelers to be well-equipped with food and beverages during traffic backups. With such crowds anticipated, travelers are urged to stay overnight on Monday April 8, and to consider arriving at their destinations on April 7.
