Friedrich wins four-man bobsleigh final, overall World Cup title

LAKE PLACID | The 2023-24 IBSF World Cup came to an end in Lake Placid with Francesco Friedrich's (GER) fifth win of the season in the 4-man bobsleigh and his sixth overall victory. The final race of the season was scored according to the result after the first race run: damage to the ice layer on the track in turn 7, which occurred during the second race run, initially led to an interruption. As the damage could not be repaired, the IBSF jury decided that the race could not be continued and was therefore scored according to the result of the first race run. Thus, Francesco Friedrich with Thorsten Margis, Matthias Sommer and Felix Straub (GER) won the last of the eight races of the season ahead of Johannes Lochner with Florian Bauer, Joshua Tasche and Georg Fleischhauer (GER, 0.17 seconds back) and Adam Ammour with Nick Stadelmann, Erik Leypold and Rupert Schenk (GER, 0.28 seconds back). With his fifth win of the season in the 4-man bobsleigh, Friedrich (GER, 1745 points) took the gold crystal globe trophy for the overall World Cup victory in the big sled for the sixth time in a row. Second overall was Emils Cipulis from Latvia (1529), who finished ninth in Lake Placid, ahead of Johannes Lochner (GER, 1515) in third place overall. The Canadian team Taylor Austin/Shaq Murray-Lawrence/Anthony Couturier/DeVaughn McEwan became Pan-American 4-man bobsleigh champions in Lake Placid. As with the European Championships, the final of the 2023/2024 IBSF World Cup also counted as a continental championship for the athletes from North, Central and South America in a race-in-race classification. Silver and bronze in the 4-man bobsleigh were secured by the hosts from the USA with the teams of pilots Frank del Duca and Kristopher Horn. Kalicki wins World Cup final; Nolte defends overall World Cup LAKE PLACID | Bobsleigh pilot Laura Nolte successfully completed her mission to defend her title. With third place at the IBSF World Cup final in Lake Placid, the 2022 2-woman bobsleigh Olympic Champion won the gold crystal globe trophy for overall World Cup victory for the second time in a row after 2023. The winners of the World Cup final were the 2023 2-woman bobsleigh World Champions Kim Kalicki/Leonie Fiebig (GER), who finished 0.81 seconds ahead of second place with two best run times. The British duo Adele Nicoll/Kya Placide surprisingly finished second in Lake Placid. It was Adele Nicoll's first podium finish in her fourth start as a pilot in the IBSF World Cup, relegating Olympic Champion Laura Nolte with Claudia Schüssler (0.85 seconds back) and World Champion Lisa Buckwitz with Lauryn Siebert into third and fourth place. The 2-woman bobsleigh finale for the IBSF World Cup 2023-24 also counted as a continental championship for the teams from North, Central and South America - in a race-in-race classification, as is usual at the European Championships. Two-time World Champion Elana Meyers Taylor (USA) and Emily Renna won the first Pan-American title in front of a home crowd in Lake Placid, ahead of their US team-mates Kaysha Love/Azaria Hill with silver. Bronze went to the Canadian duo Cynthia Appiah/Morgan Ramsay. Sylvia Hoffman (USA), who won Olympic bronze in Beijing 2022 as the brakewoman for Elana Meyers Taylor, made her debut as a pilot in the IBSF World Cup in Lake Placid. With brakewoman Sydney Milani, Sylvia Hoffman finished in 13th place. Laura Nolte (GER, 1720 points) won the overall standings for the 2023-24 IBSF World Cup ahead of Kim Kalicki (GER, 1683) and Lisa Buckwitz (GER, 1539).
