Saranac three-peats as Section VII wrestling champion

SARANAC | A trio of Saranac wrestlers earned titles to lead the Spartans in their third consecutive Section VII championship. Teegan Smith (108), Alex Clancy (138) and Dylan Cogswell (285) won their respective finals to help Saranac accumulate 172 points. The Spartans held off Beekmantown (168), Northern Adirondack (160), AuSable Valley (119), Peru (113) and Seton Catholic (8) in team scoring. Smith, an eighth-grader, pinned Beekmantown's Lily Blazina in 34 seconds at 108 pounds for his 23rd win by fall of the season. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler by the section's head coaches. Clancy, who did not wrestle in a competitive match for nearly eight weeks due to injury, pinned Peru's Mason Starke at 1:09 to win at 138 pounds. Clancy was voted by his peers as the Champion of Champions. Cogswell improved to 37-2 on the season with his 30th win by fall, pinning Peru's Bryce Wiggins at the 44-second mark. Beekmantown, the team runner-up, also had three wrestlers win finals matches. Sawyer Bell kept his remarkable 44-0 record intact by pinning Northern Adirondack's Owen Smith at 1:56 to win the 131-pound class. At 145 pounds, the Eagles' Jacob Magiera scored a 10-6 decision over Northern Adirondack's Dustin Labarge. Jack Brown's pin of Saranac's Landen Gadway at 1:56 of the 170-pound bout concluded Beekmantown's title-winners. Northern Adirondack led the way with five sectional champions, with two of the matches coming right down to the wire. Jackson Labarge, an eighth-grader for the Bobcats, held off Saranac's Colby Roesler by decision, 10-7, at 101 pounds. In one of the most competitive finals of the day, Northern Adirondack's Reece Labarge edged Saranac's Gavin Morrow, 2-0, to win the 124-pound title. Hayden Bartlemus and Trey McGee captured wins by fall at 116 and 215 pounds, respectively, and Parker Manor's 6-1 decision over Beekmantown's Lucas Corrado won him the 160-pound championship. At 152 pounds, AuSable Valley's Dominick LaPier improved to 39-0 by pinning Saranac's Branigan Boulds at 2:35. LaPier, a senior, won a pair of matches in the 160-pound class of the NYSPHSAA Division II championships last year. In a highly-competitive match, the Patriots' Warren Pray outlasted Beekmantown's Alexander Hall, 2-0, to win at 190 pounds. Up next, area wrestlers will set their sights on the NYSPHSAA boys wrestling championships on Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, at MVP Arena in Albany.
