Clinton Correctional inmate found guilty of C.O. assaults

DANNEMORA | An incarcerated individual serving time for sexual assault crimes is now facing a lengthier prison term after being found guilty of two violent attacks on Clinton Correctional Facility officers. The Clinton County District Attorney's Office said Joseph McCrimmon was found guilty by a trial jury Feb. 1 relating to an 11-count indictment charging him with numerous felony assault, contraband and weapons charges. The case stems from a series of incidents in May 2022 that began with routine security rounds in the Lower F Block of the maximum-security prison. According to the D.A.'s Office, Correctional Officer Michael Garrison was performing routine wellness checks when he approached McCrimmon's cell and heard the inmate say 'Hey CO'. After getting the officer's attention, McCrimmon threw a hot liquid on the officer's face, head and arm, resulting in first and second-degree burns. The Corrections Emergency Response Team was called in to extricate McCrimmon from his cell and during the response, McCrimmon kicked another officer in the ribs, bit his hand and hit him several times in the head with a food can tied in a sock. The officer suffered a range of injuries and was placed on limited duty for more than a month as he recovered. During a frisk and search of his cell, McCrimmon was found in possession of a can line with a makeshift handle and a sharpened toothbrush. McCrimmon is currently serving a 15-year determinate sentence with 10 years post release supervision with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Services on 2016 convictions of first-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree criminal contempt and third-degree assault. He is now scheduled to reappear in Clinton County Court for sentencing before Judge William Favreau April 18 when he faces up to 15 years in prison with five years post-release supervision on the attempted assault and attempted aggravated assault of a peace officer convictions. As a second-felony offender he also faces five-to-seven years and five years of post-release supervision on the second-degree assault conviction; two-to-four years for attempted second-degree assault and up to seven years on the contraband and weapons charges. The sentences for the assault-related convictions can be imposed consecutively since they involve two separate victims. The case was prosecuted by Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Vivian Joo.
