Moriah native surpasses 1,000 points with Plattsburgh State

NEW PALTZ | Dylan Trombley reached another milestone in his illustrious basketball career. The Moriah product surpassed 1,000 collegiate points in Plattsburgh State's 74-73 SUNYAC loss at New Paltz on Saturday, Jan. 20. Trombley, a graduate student, spent three seasons competing for SUNY Oneonta in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2021-22. There, he accumulated 824 points while appearing in 76 games for a 10.8 points-per-game average. The 2020-21 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Trombley came back to start 21 of 24 games for the Red Dragons the following school year, earning him second team all-SUNYAC honors. Trombley spent one season off the court before transferring closer to home at Plattsburgh State. He has helped lead Mike Blaine's Cardinals to an 8-8 overall record and 5-4 mark in conference play, good for a fourth-place tie with Cortland in the standings. A fitness and wellness leadership major, Trombley scored a season-high 28 points against his old team in Plattsburgh State's 86-80 win at Oneonta on Friday, Jan. 19. The 6-foot-3-inch guard leads the Cardinals in made 3-pointers (25), free throw percentage (86.4%) and rebounds (82). Trombley competed in basketball and football at Moriah. A former Class D basketball state Player of the Year, he led the Vikings to four sectional championships, four regional championships and one state title. Trombley played AAU for Paul Booth and Lone Wolf Athletics, where he won a 2017 17U national championship. He is the son of Ed and Beth Trombley. The Cardinals return to Memorial Hall from a four-game road trip on Tuesday, Jan. 30, when they host North Country rival Potsdam at 7:30 p.m. NEW PALTZ 74 PLATTSBURGH STATE 73 NEW PALTZ | Trombley had 11 points on the night to go with four rebounds and one steal. Willard Anderson Jr. led the Cardinals in points with 13, as four Cardinals reached double figures. Anderson also led the Cardinals in steals with five to go with two rebounds and two assists. Kevin Tabb and Jeremiah Smith were also in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. Tabb and Franklin Infante were making plays on the offensive end for the Cardinals, as they led the Cardinals with four assists each. Smith was making plays on the defensive end, as he led the Cardinals with five blocks to go with four rebounds. Ikechukwu Ezike and Tim Thomas had eight and seven points, while Ezike had four rebounds, two blocks and one steal, and Thomas had six rebounds and two steals. Sasha Vidrini also had seven points to go with three rebounds and one block. For the Hawks, A.J. Knight led all scorers with 19 points, and Alex Krupinski was also in double figures with 12 points. The three ball was a big factor, as the Hawks made seven threes in the first half and 11 total at 45.8% compared to the Cardinals' 6 of 16 at 37.5%. The field goal percentage was close, as the Cardinals shot a solid 42.9 % and the Hawks a little better at 43.1%. Both teams made 13 of 19 free throws, shooting 69.4%. The Cardinals won the turnover battle, 15-19, and got 22 points off turnovers compared to the Hawks' 15. The Cardinals won the rebounding battle, 34-30, but lost second-chance points, 0-12. The Cardinals were stout defensively, as they had nine blocks compared to the Hawks' six.
