The unveiling of historic art

NORTH CREEK | The North Creek Railway Depot Museum is inviting the public to the highly-anticipated unveiling of the restored 1939 drawing, "Pictorial Map of North Creek in the Adirondack." The free event will be held Sunday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at Tannery Pond Center in North Creek. Last year curators and museum volunteers from the Depot Museum discovered the delightful drawing among its archived materials. The whimsical folk drawing captures the excitement of skiers who traveled on the storied Ski Trains (est. 1934) from Schenectady and New York City to North Creek. Unfortunately, the work was in need of restoration before it could be handled or displayed, but it is now ready to be shared with the public. An anonymous donor generously funded the conservation of this ink and watercolor drawing by Dorothea Christine Loewel (1907-1990). Loewel, an art teacher from New Rochelle, New York, while on a stay at the American Hotel (now, the site of the Phoenix Hotel) in 1939 was moved to memorialize the hubbub and excitement brought to the area by skiers to our area. This restored work is brighter and richer in color revealing more detail of the town of North Creek of that period. The evening's presentation will feature Head Conservator, Carolyn Frisa of Works on Paper, LLC based in Bellows Falls, Vt., who will illuminate the painstaking process of conservation. In addition, there will be the showing of a vintage ski movie with commentary by Greg Schaefer, President of the Depot Museum, as well as a musical performance by Doug Irving, singer/songwriter, of his original Snow Train song. It is fitting that the restoration has been completed in time to help commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the First Snow Train to North Creek, as the town of Johnsburg is preparing a number of celebratory activities throughout the Winter Season. So it is with great excitement that the North Creek Depot Museum invites our community to the Jan. 14 unveiling of this delightful work. All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
