Outdoor adventure at Point au Roche

PLATTSBURGH | A vibrant sunset at Point au Roche ushered in the longest night of the year and winter arrived with a splash of warm color on a frigid Lake Champlain. Point au Roche naturalists celebrated the changing season with a bonfire and s'mores, a Winter Solstice celebration as holiday weekends drew near. The lakefront state park is meticulously kept with trails open year-round. Recent warm weather and rain removed early snow cover, pushed the lake near flood stage, restarting a wintry wait for snow. Weather aside, the New York State Park is open year-round and hosts events weekly to get people outside, onto trails and in the Nature Center. TRAIL ADVENTURE Point au Roche and the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) have a First Day hike planned for Jan. 1, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., exploring nature trails while searching for signs of winter wildlife. There are two hikes, a three-mile trek through the park's trails and a one-mile walk at a slower place. There are birding events planned for wintertime exploration along the shores of Lake Champlain at Point au Roche, the first is on Friday, Jan. 5 at 9 a.m. A series of guest presentations are set for Sustainable Saturdays, the third Saturday of every month, to help people learn ways to become more eco-friendly on a budget. And the Point au Roche Little Explorers Program provides nature-themed storytime with outdoor activities for ages 0 to 5 periodically throughout the year. Point au Roche is open from sunrise to sunset. Trails are open when snow flies for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and maps are available online for download. There is no cost to visit the Nature Center at 19 Camp Red Cloud Road in Beekmantown or to use the nature trail system.
